Fes Luxury Riads: Where to Stay

Fes el Bali, the old medina of Fes, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. Its restored palace riads are among the most beautiful places to stay on a Morocco luxury tour.

Why stay in a riad in Fes

Behind plain walls, a Fes riad opens onto a courtyard of zellige tiles, carved cedar and stucco, often with a fountain or orange trees. Many were the homes of wealthy merchant families and have been restored as boutique hotels with only a handful of suites.

Staying inside the medina means you wake up a few steps from the souks, the madrasas and the Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 and often described as the oldest existing university in the world.

What to look for in a luxury riad

  • Few suites, so the service stays personal
  • A rooftop terrace with views over the medina
  • A pool, plunge pool or in-house hammam
  • Easy access from a gate where your car can stop, as cars cannot enter the old medina
  • A team that can arrange private guides and dinners

Palace riad or hotel outside the walls?

A riad gives you the atmosphere of the medina; a hotel just outside the walls gives you gardens, larger rooms and easier car access. On many luxury tours we combine both: nights in a riad, with a private guide to cross the medina calmly.

How long to stay in Fes

Two nights is the minimum to see the medina with a private guide, the tanneries, the Bou Inania and Al Attarine madrasas and the artisans’ workshops. Three nights let you add a day trip to Volubilis and Meknes.
